Biodegradability

To qualify "biodegradable" (which is the case for the TPS, PLA or PHA), the packaging material has to meet the EN13432 norm in the following context:

Composition : the norm establishes a maximum rate of volatile solids, heavy metal and fluorine content in the original material.

Biodegradability : the acceptable limit of biodegradability is at least of 90% in total, or maximum 90% degradation of the reference substance.

Disintegration under the effect of the composting. If ≥10% of the original mass with more than 2mm sieve, the material is not up to the EN13432 standards.

Quality of final composting and ecotoxicity: should not be modified by the packaging materials added to the compost and must not be dangerous for the environment. The norm imposes ecotoxicological tests on the final compost and requires a performance higher than 90% by a corresponding compostage.
